Student absences are classified as cuts when that student has attended school for part of the day but has been absent from one or more classes without the permission of his/her parents or school officials.  The following progressive actions will be taken for students who are tardy or fail to attend scheduled classes without permission.

If attendance violations continue, the student's grade and graduation status will be affected.  Students and their parents may also be referred to the campus School Attendance Review Team (SART) prior to the district Student Attendance Review Board (SARB).

CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION:

  1. Teachers will make class participation a part of all students' grades
  2. Classroom participation could be in the form of daily written assignments or verbal contributions or any other procedure the teacher chooses to give to the class
  3. Classroom participation credit cannot be made up by absent students (verified or unverified absences.)  The only exception would be for students participating in an approved school activity

PARENT/STUDENT NOTIFICATIONS:

  1. The curriculum letter from each teacher will explain the policy of class participation to the parent and student.
  2. Progress Reports will be issued by the teacher and marked "below average" and "absences affecting grade" when absences total five or more (verified or unverified) from any class
  3. At ten absences (verified or unverified), the teacher will give the student an "Attendance Contract" that is required to be signed by the parents.  Copies of the signed contract will be provided to the assistant principal and counselor.  The counselor will make a student/parent contract after receiving the first Attendance Contract
  4. At the point where the student's absences prevent him/her from passing the class, the teacher may issue a referral to the assistant principal.  The assistant principal will decide if removal from the class or alternative education placement is necessary and possible

The Attendance Contract must precede the referral.

DETENTION HALL RULES:

  1. Students must be in detention hall, quietly seated, 10 minutes after school ends
  2. Students will bring study materials and study independently
  3. Students are to sit quietly the entire time
  4. Students will abide by standard classroom rules and expectations
  5. Students that fail to follow directions, or are disruptive in any manner, will be removed from the hall and receive NO CREDIT for the time served

NOTE: FAILURE TO SERVE DETENTION WILL RESULT IN DOUBLING OF THE ASSIGNED TIME.  ALL DETENTIONS WILL BE SERVED ON THE DAY AGREED UPON BY THE TEACHER AND STUDENT.  FAILURE TO SERVE DOUBLED DETENTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REFERRAL AND ASSIGNMENT TO SATURDAY SCHOOL.
